SaraEllen Strongman, Assistant professor in the department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Penn/GSWS Graduate Certificate alum, recently wrote about the history of Black Feminist support for abortion rights in the Washington Post. She notes: "As abortion rights become an increasingly significant focus for feminists in the 1960s, Black feminists did not place the same emphasis on them as White feminists did.

We are writing in response to Friday’s devastating Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
The GSWS Program and Center for Feminist, Queer, and Transgender Studies take seriously our role as the primary space on campus for scholarship and advocacy around the many intersecting issues brought about by this decision. For years we have partnered with faculty, staff, and student organizations around campus to support, facilitate, and create the conditions for reproductive justice for all.
