GSWS/FQT Welcomes New Director
Jessa Lingel is an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where she studies digital culture, looking for the ways that relationships to technology can show us gaps in power or possibilities for social change. She received her Ph.D. in Communication and Information from Rutgers University. She has an M.L.I.S. from Pratt Institute and an M.A.
Penn Ph.D. candidate Penelope Lusk named 2024 Queen Elizabeth Scholar
Penn Ph.D. candidate and GSWS graduate certificate student Penelope Lusk was recently named 2024 Queen Elizabeth Scholar. The award funds a year of study at Oxford College. Read more at Penn Today.

Deborah Thomas Named 2024 Guggenheim Fellow
Deborah A. Thomas, R. Jean Brownlee Professor of Anthropology and Core Faculty in GSWS, was recently named a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow. Thomas was one of 188 chosen in the United States and Canada from nearly 3,000 applicants working across 52 scholarly disciplines. During her fellowship year, she will be working on three ongoing projects that integrate creative practice and research. Read more about Thomas's work here.

GSWS Awards Season is here! With due dates on April 5th and April 15th, there are several awards open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty, including the Leboy-Davies Graduate Student Award, Phyllis Rackin Graduate Award, Student Research Expense Grants, Non Tenure Track Teaching Faculty Research Grant, and the Lynda S. Professor Beans Velocci has been featured in a special issue on sex and gender in Cell Journal! Featuring over 20 trans scholars, the focus issue of this flagship biology journal includes articles on gender equality in academia, enhancement of sex-related variables' rigor, and support for transgender researchers.
