Rosemary Thomas of the Penn Medicine Program for LGBT Health explains transgender youth greater risk for eating disorders, saying that members of the LGBT community have similar health concerns to the broader population, but have historically had “poorer access to health care and experiences of stigma and discrimination.” Read the full article on
Francesca Russello Ammon: ACLS Fellowship
Francesca Russello Ammon, associate professor of city and regional planning who teaches in the graduate program in historic preservation in the Weitzman School of Design, has been selected for an ACLS Fellowship for her project “Preserving the City: Urban Renewal and Restoration in Society Hill, Philadelphia. Preserving the City” applies modern mapping technologies to document the history of Society Hill and the iconic neighborhood’s history of preservation.
GSWS Major Deborah Rabinovich ('19) Named Dean's Scholar
Senior GSWS Major Deborah Rabinovich was named a 2019 Dean's Scholar. She was honored, along with nine other undergraduates receiving the award from the College of Arts and Sciences, at the Levin Family Dean's Forum on March 14th. Read more about the award here.

Nadeen Spence and Joanne N. Smith are both advocates for the rights of women and girls, but Spence is from Jamaica, Smith a first-generation Haitian from New York. On Monday at Perry World House (PWH), Penn’s global policy research and engagement hub, they told chillingly similar stories of girls who were sexually abused by clergy, only to have the church and their communities turn their backs to the crime.
Faculty Award of Merit Presented to Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw
Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw is Associate Professor of History of Art and affiliated faculty in Latin American and Latino Studies, Cinema Studies, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies. She received her Ph.D. in art history from Stanford University and then held an appointment as an assistant professor of History of Art and African and African American Studies at Harvard University for five years before coming to the University of Pennsylvania in 2005.
