Brian Spooner's research interests include cultural and social anthropology, globalization, the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, social organization, Islam, religion, ethnohistory, ecology and non-industrial economies.  Publications include Reading Nasta'liq: Persian and Urdu Hands 1500 to the Present, Entry to Advanced Turkish, American Association of Teachers of Turkish, Literacy in the Persianate World: Writing and the Social Order, Population Growth: Anthropological Implications and Language Policy in Afghanistan and adjacent countries.
